Oncology nurse honoured in Russia [Новость добавлена - 05.02.2008]

Congratulations to Virginia Gumley who received the title of Honorary Professor at the Moscow State University and Affiliate, Ulyanovsk State on 11 January, 2008.

The title was awarded in recognition of “outstanding accomplishments and in appreciation of the pioneering contribution in the field of Palliative Care Developments – including Education and Training in Palliative Care for Medical and Nursing professionals in Russia.”

The first ceremony took place in Moscow State University and the second in Ulyanovsk State University. The most significant work took place in Ulyanovsk City and Region where a comprehensive hospice and palliative care system was developed (using a tripartite model) which involved the Health Administration, the University and the Oncological Institute during 1990–1999. The Ulyanovsk ceremony was attended by the Governor of the Region, the Rector, President and Vice President of the University, along with Moscow State University personnel and people from Ulyanovsk State University and Region.

Virginia continues her involvement in oncology and palliative care and is currently Director of Nursing/Nursing Education Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Lahore, Pakistan.
