Father and founder of the European Association for Palliative Care. 1927-2008.

PROFESSOR GIANVITTORIO VENTAFRIDDA

He was born on the 29th of October 1927 in Ragogna - Udine (ITALY).

In 1952 he graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pavia and got a

specialization in anaesthesia at the University of Bologna.

From 1955 to 1958 he took a rotating internship and residency training in

Anaesthesiology at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

From 1958 to 1970 he was Associate Director of Anaesthesia at the National Cancer Institute of Milan.

From 1970 to 1980 he was the Director of the Division of Pain Therapy and

Rehabilitation at the National Cancer Institute of Milan.

From 1980 to 1993 he worked at the National Cancer Institute of Milan as the

Director of the Palliative Care Division.

From 1984 to 1993 he Directed the WHO Collaborating Centre in Cancer Pain at the National Cancer Institute of Milan.

Since 1993 he is the WHO Official Expert in Palliative Care.

He is a Consultant at the European Institute of Oncology of Milan since 1994.

Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre in Cancer Control and Palliative Care at the European Institute of Oncology of Milan since 1994.

From 1977 to 2008 he has been the Scientific Director of the Fondazione Floriani.

He is the founder and the Honorary President of the European Association for Palliative Care, (EAPC).

He is the founder & Council Member of the “International Association for the Study of Pain”, (IASP).

 

PUBLICATIONS

He has realised more than 200 articles on the topics of pain, pharmacology, nonpharmacological modalities, palliative care, terminal care and co-editor of several books on cancer pain published in the international and local press. Author of WHO’s Analgesic Ladder on Cancer Pain Management translated in more than 28 languages and applied worldwide. In 2004 Fondazione Floriani in collaboration with WHO has published 2 booklets: The Solid Facts - Palliative Care and The Better Palliative Care for Older People. These have been divulgate in some European Countries as well as in the Asian ones and in the South America and States. Furthermore in 2004 he has published on the European Journal of Cancer, an International working group convened by the European School of Oncology. “A new international framework for palliative care”.

In 2005, Fondazione Floriani in collaboration with some Italian Associations (SICP,

FCP and SIGG) has translated and published into Italian the 2 booklets.

In 2006 he has published on the European Journal Pain a Survey of chronic pain in

Europe: prevalence, impact on daily life, and treatment.
