The 8th International Symposium on Pediatric Pain in Acapulco Mexico. [??????? ????????? - 03.02.2009]
Dear Colleagues, With opened arms, we invite you to attend and participate in the 8th International Symposium on Pediatric Pain in Acapulco Mexico. By “Sharing Knowledge With All Cultures” you will form part of a brotherhood of people around the world who are committed to the relief of pain in childhood, seeking to extend the latest knowledge and advances on pediatric pain. The Scientific Program is designed to spotlight the recent advances in diverse areas of knowledge on pediatric pain, with magnificent speakers that will enhance the event. Also, a strong emphasis is being placed on the educational activities that will not only contribute to share recent advances but also on the importance of educating our society and professionals as well as politicians that “pain in children can be relieved if the effort is done to alleviate it”. Mexico is a large and culturally diverse country with art and history, spanning from Maya, Aztec and Toltec cultures through colonial and modern times. Though mostly Spanish speaking, Mexico is rich in languages and dialects as well as in colorful customs. Our cultural expressions are as diverse and exuberant as are our environment and food. You should be prepared for a variety of fruits and abundant meals. The Symposium is located at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess, the central building of this hotel is reminiscent of an Aztec Pyramid, symbolic of “people coming from the four corners of the world, focused at the apex on one central objective which is to alleviate pain in children”. We will be surrounded by a naturally exuberant landscape, some of the best known beaches in the world and the fun and attractive night life that make Acapulco a down to earth paradise. Our Local Committee has set for itself the objective of providing the appropriate resources so that all participants will be enriched scientifically and culturally. You will be overwhelmed by a massive dose of recent development in our field and you will enjoy cultural activities that you will remember for many years to come. Hospitality is at the core of Mexican values: Bienvenido Amigo (Welcome my Friend). See you in Acapulco! Ma. Antonieta Flores, MD, MSc | Local Chair
Dear Colleagues, Welcome to ISPP 2009. On behalf of the Scientific Program Committee I would like to invite you to Acapulco to take part in this important meeting. The prevention, alleviation, and management of childhood pain remain one of the most important and the most human of tasks. Understanding how we might make an impact on global pain, childhood pain relief, and sustain that impact, requires the skills of a range of practitioners and scientists. This is truly a multidisciplinary endeavor. In putting together this meeting we have deliberately attempted to capture this multidisciplinary flavor. We will focus on different points of care, from pain management in an emergency to the attempts to influence health policy reform. We will focus on different advances in pain medicine, from the use of computing technology in accessing psychological interventions to the latest findings in nervous system development. The program has some themes. First, as you might expect, I am interested in evidence based pain medicine. I would like to promote and provoke discussion and debate about how we find out what works for whom, why, and how we can learn more. Second, sharing knowledge within and across cultures is a key feature of the program. I encourage submissions that explicitly address attempts at knowledge and skill sharing. Third, I want us to have fun. Science is fundamentally a collaborative and community orientated business. It is very important that those of us working in this field are able to look up from our busy clinical/ research/political lives, take a broader perspective, and learn from each other. With these themes in mind we have therefore retained some of the successful features of previous meetings. First, we have a broad based Plenary Program. Second, we want the Workshop and Seminar Program to come from you, the community. Please do submit your Workshop proposals by completing the online submission form which can be found at www.ispp2009mexico.com. Third, we have maintained a specific Education Day which will have a rich program. Fourthly, I am grateful to Dr. Leora Kuttner for agreeing to again host and organize the Media Festival. I strongly encourage you to support this. It is a unique feature of pain meetings and an important way to get our message across. Finally, everyone who is a delegate is encouraged to submit a Poster presentation. Take the risk! Share what you have learned, have studied, know and need to know in a poster. Poster presentations are the lifeblood of the meeting, and where all the new science is seeded. So, you are very welcome. Come and join us in Acapulco and be a part in the 8th International Symposium of Pediatric Pain: Sharing Knowledge with All Cultures.
