Between 5 and 6 May 2009, 59 attendees from 27 countries came together for the fourth Worldwide Summit of Hospice and palliative care national associations  in Vienna, Austria. The theme of the summit was ‘Discovering your Voice’ in line with World Hospice and Palliative Care Day this year.

The summit brought together national and regional hospice leaders to interact and learn from each other.

 Programme

The summit was opened by David Praill who welcomed the delegates and introduced the two days. Pavel Pachta, the Deputy Secretary of the International Narcotics Control Board did the key note speech. He clearly outlined the issues around increasing opioid availability from the perspective of the INCB and called on national associations to provide INCB with information on barriers to access.

The summit programme on the first day consisted of workshops in priority areas for national associations including national strategy development, curricula development, fundraising, advocacy and World Day planning. The second day of the programme focussed on individual leadership training.
