This specialty program provides holistic, interdisciplinary care for children and teens with life-limiting or terminal diseases and their families and aims to control acute and chronic/complex pain in all in- and outpatients at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, and throughout the surrounding community. Pain & Palliative Care staff work collaboratively with pediatric sub-specialists throughout Children’s Hospitals and Clinics, including Integrative Medicine which provides mind- body interventions such as hypnosis, biofeedback, massage, aromatherapy and much more.
In 2008, the Pain & Palliative Care Program at Children’s of Minnesota was a recipient of the distinguished Circle of Life award (sponsored by American Hospital Association) as well as being designated as one of two pediatric palliative care leadership centers with the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC). Our Children’s Institute for Pain & Palliative Care provides comprehensive teaching, including the annual Pediatric Pain Master Class.
Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota is the 7th largest pediatric health care organization in the United States with more than 4.300 employees, 332-staffed beds (50% of which are designated as intensive care) and two campuses in St. Paul and Minneapolis (3.2 million inhabitants in the metro area). The primary responsibility for our new colleague is to provide holistic care to children with life-threatening diseases and their families. This includes the aggressive management of pain and other distressing symptoms in the inpatient setting utilizing both pharmacological and integrative, non-pharmacological management within the context of an interdisciplinary approach. As the pain service is an integral part of our program this practitioner would also provide care for children with acute, chronic/complex and procedural pain.
Good communication skills, flexibility and a desire to learn together with the interdisciplinary team are a must. Knowledge of managing children in pediatric palliative and hospice care and/or acute and chronic pain management would be preferred. However, the successful applicant will undergo a designated training period to gain clinical excellence in all these areas.
The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team, including 6 nurses, 2 APRNs, 3 pediatricians, 4 social workers, 2 psychologists, chaplain, child life specialist, bereavement counselor, 2 research coordinators, and integrative medicine therapists to assure timely assessment and intervention for all children referred to the program.
Qualifications include: Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist certification or Nurse Practitioner certification required. Current Minnesota RN license (or eligibility);
