How patient groups are delivering life-saving messages to all corners of the globe
Cancer professionals deal with the consequences of public fear and ignorance about the
disease whenever they treat cancers that could have been prevented, or they try to rescue
advanced cases that should have been picked up much earlier, or try to help patients whose
lives are being blighted by prejudice and discrimination in their working or social lives.
Patient groups are ideally placed to challenge this fear and ignorance and many are now
helping changing perceptions and understanding of cancer in communities in all corners of
the globe.
This article looks at the work of three networks of patient groups, one in breast and the other
two in more rare cancers, brain and chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML).
- Could greater awareness and interation between patient groups and health professionals
benefit patients and the fight against cancer?
