World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is a unified day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care around the world.

The theme for World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2012 is ‘Living to the end - palliative care for an ageing population.’

In almost every country, the proportion of people aged over 60 years is growing faster than any other age group, as a result of both longer life expectancy and declining fertility rates.

From 2000 until 2050, the world's population aged 60 and over will more than triple from 600 million to 2 billion. Most of this increase is occurring in less developed countries - where the number of older people will rise from 400 million in 2000 to 1.7 billion by 2050.

The specific palliative care needs of older people are increasingly being recognized due to the burden of non-communicable diseases on older people as well as the ageing HIV pandemic in the era of anti-retroviral therapy.

The palliative care needs of older people are complex and often neglected. The issue is globally applicable and incorporates older people living with life-limiting diseases as well as the issue of older people as carers of people with life-limiting illness, particularly HIV and AIDS, in developing countries.
